I have now been on twitter for a couple of months now and am loving it. Jon is the one that got me into it and I use it a lot. For those that may not know it is like mini blogging about what I am up to throughout the day. Occasionally I post photos taken with my phone, but mostly it is used to communicate what I am up to. If you are on twitter and want to follow me my twitter name is joshmetts. If you are on twitter let me know I would like to follow you too. I have also added a twitter feed to the side of the blog.
And yes this is a copied post from the family blog for those that follow both blogs.

This is pretty cool to see Tony Hawk filming and editing his own skate session. Rather than having professionals film and edit. Just the way we would do it.

Ollieing Curb |
Since the weather has been getting nicer around here I have been doing a little more skateboarding. I have been learning a few extra tricks beyond the ollie. I have learned to shove it while stationary. Pop shove it on carpet. I have been working on the kick flip also on the carpet and grass. (Although I have yet come close to landing one.)
Yesterday Andrew and I went out to find a nice flat area to skate with curbs and ledges. At first we were just skating the parking lot with Andrew doing some more technical tricks off the ledges. I then decided to try to ollie up the curb, I have had a big issue with the timing of ollieing over objects. I tend to lean back rather than jump my body forward over the board. I knew that ollieing up a curb would force myself to actually do it.
At first I was getting the board up the curb, but I just couldn't commit to landing both feet on the board. I would land with my front foot and back foot off. I would say I was being a bit of a chicken. After many, many failed attempts I finally landed one and rolled away. I was in shock I honestly had to look down and double check my back foot to make sure it was on the board. It was such I good feeling, I really felt like I accomplished something. (Although not big compared to what others do, but definitely progress for someone who just started really skating at the end of last summer.) I wanted to leave at that point you know end on a high note. I decided that I needed to try again and sure enough landed it again. I landed it at least 7 more times, I didn't land 7 straight, but 7 more times out of about 15 attempts. It really felt good knowing I learned how to ollie a curb. Next I need to learning to ollie off the curb rather than just ride off.
Skateboarding is just so much fun, it is scary to try new things cause the concrete doesn't feel good when you hit it, but the rewards of landing tricks overrides the pain of the concrete. I love that I skateboarding is relatively cheap to do. Once you buy the board it is pretty much free to do any where. I am so glad I made the decision to get into skateboarding.

Going Web Design Geek! |
I just realized that I passed the 100 post mark on the blog, pretty neat to see that happen and I look forward to many more.
On another note I have decided to attempt to teach myself the art of web design through code. Although I have made my few attempts at web design through Dreamweaver using the WYSIWYG based designing I felt like I never really grasped what was going on. Since then I have moved our family site to iWeb on the Mac since it is so simple and elegant although it still has some issues such as the way it publishes if you don't have .mac.
Many know that I have designed a website for a business, I guess I should say tweaked a template to make it their own. I have tinkered around with some other websites including my own and families'. But I really never felt like I was very good at it, I really only have basic knowledge. In my recent hunts for jobs and not getting request for interviews I thought to myself that I enjoy working on website and feel like I can do them if I only had the knowledge. I know that there is possibility to make money designing websites or finding jobs involving web design, but that is not the reason I am doing it. (Although it could possibly lead to that one day.)
I really want to expand my basic knowledge of design and see how much I can learn on my own through tutorials on the web. There are a lot of free resources out there that have extensive tutorials about everything associated with web design. I found and incredible site called w3schools.com and there are tutorials with examples to follow for just about everything. I have just finished the entire section on HTML and throughly enjoyed it and learn a lot of stuff that I didn't know. I did recognize a lot of it since I have messed with code, but never fully understood it. I look forward to what I can learn over the next several weeks and months to come.
I plan on going through the XHTML tutorial next then followed by CSS along with Javascript. I want to learn all that I can about the basics first and then I am interested in learning some actual web programming languages such as ASP, PHP, Ruby, etc... I know that if I take it nice and easy and learn all the basics then I can possibly move into these programming areas, but that is on down the road. I have really enjoyed everything that I have learned so far and look forward to what else I can learn and hopefully put together a nice looking website.
I have been using the app called Coda that is mac only and a very impressive applications that requires you to use the code to build and design sites. Then I may move back to Dreamweaver, if I feel it has a lot more to offer, but if I can force myself to only work in code I know I will be better off for the future. I am excited and look forward to the adventure in coding.

Working Out |
I know I need to get back on the workout routine. I feel so much better when I am doing it and plus I eat a lot better. During this time when I have taken "time off" it hasn't been the best. I was planning on starting up again today, but on Saturday I woke up with a very stiff neck, I have never felt anything like it in my life. I think I have been sleeping wrong and then as I was getting dressed my neck had this shooting pain no matter what I did. Kristee has been helping me get it to feeling better, but it is still sore and I can't fully look over my shoulder yet. It is feeling a lot better, but I would rather wait to start the workout routine once it is fully healed, don't want to injure it more.
I doubt this would have happened to my neck had I been working out, but it did make me realize that I need to get back on the horse. Plus I have a few people that had been keeping up with my progress and wondered where I had gone. It is another reason why I liked posting about the progress, I really like it when people hold me accountable. I wanted to start on a Monday, but at this point I am going to try to start as soon as I can. I really look forward to starting the whole 16 week + process again. I am still holding my weight in the 193-195 range so I will be excited to see what I can burn off, I know that I have lost a lot of the muscle and that is the reason for keeping my weight down.
Once I start back I hope that I can stay sick free, and injury free.

Uncharted |
I officially beat Uncharted Drake's Fortune this past weekend. It is by far one the best single player gaming experiences I have had in a long time. It was gorgeous to look at and then on top of that, an awesome time. I really felt like I was playing through a movie and there are very few games that can give you that feeling. The way they implemented cut scenes into game play it was truly seamless. It had the perfect balance of gunplay and exploring, but I wish they would have included more puzzles or plat-forming game play. This is without a doubt the best game on the PS3, but I think one of the best games that came out last year that didn't get a whole of of praise. If you own a PS3 then it is a must buy. I can't wait for Uncharted 2 to come out. An absolute blast!!!

Professor Layton and The Curious Village |
I haven't played my ds in recent months and was to the point that I was really wondering if it was worth keeping. The PSP has really caught my eye and has more of the types of games that I love to play. I decided to look to see what games were out for the ds and came across Professor Layton and The Curious Village. I hadn't heard much about the game and decided to read about it and it seemed like a game that I would thoroughly enjoy.
I went on Sunday to go pick up a copy and started playing it and I am know loving my ds again. This game is so much fun to play, it has mystery as a part of the story, and puzzles/ brainteasers that you do throughout the game while trying to solve a murder case. There are twists that occur during the story that really keep me interested in the story along with the puzzles.
There are over 100 puzzles to solve and they release weekly downloadable puzzles. Some of them are very easy and some are quite challenging requiring a lot of thought. You are awarded picarats for solving the puzzle, more for the harder ones, but I have yet to figure out what I will get if I get enough of them. It just says something special will happen.
The game is an absolute blast to play and has really renewed my love for the ds although I do plan on buying a PSP, I just won't be selling my ds. I also plan on picking up Call of Duty 4, I have read that it is a pretty good game on the ds, I guess we will see. God of War is coming out next month and I am excited about it.

RROD Update |
My Xbox 360 arrived this morning via Fed Ex. It of course has a new serial number and a manufacture date of 1/2/08. I wonder if it really is a new 360 or are they relabeling the ones they fix. It looks brand new and actually sounds better than my old one. It always sounded like my drive tray would catch a little when I opened and closed the old one and this one sounds perfect. I will have to see how the machine sounds with extended sessions of play, but initially it is very quiet.
Looking back it took exactly 18 days to file the report, get the coffin, send it off and get it back. It wasn't as fast as their support site says, but it was better than waiting a month. Now I just hope that it doesn't happen again.

RROD Update |
I checked the status of my xbox today and was pleasantly surprised to see that it had changed to Device Sent to Customer. Hopefully the shipping will only take a few days and I will have it by the end of the week. The serial number changed so I know it is a different one, I have my fingers crossed that it will be a new one.

Just a quick note to help me keep track of how long it takes for the xbox to get back. They received the xbox today, but the status on the xbox support page still says waiting on xbox. Hopefully it will be a quick turn around, maybe they work on the weekends, LOL!! (I hope so.)

New Team Ico Game |
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/847/847426p1.html?RSSwhen2008-01-24_103100&RSSid=847426
I saw this article in the PS3 news section about some job listing for a new game brought to you by "team Ico". They are the ones that brought us 2 of the most wonderful games ever Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. As I have written before these games are must own games for the PS2. They are such true adventure games where other try and come up short. I love adventure games that have puzzles to solve throughout the game and both of these games delivered. Looking at the screenshot that they provided with the article it looks like the hole at the end of the Colossus game in the giant tower with the stair case the winds around. I cannot wait to see what they are going to develop with the PS3, both of these games looked beautiful on the PS2 I can only imagine how awesome they will look on the PS3.

Goodbye, See You Soon! |
The "coffin" for my 360 arrived today and I packed it up and shipped it out today. I will be interested to see how long it takes for them to get me my replacement. I have read online that some people get new ones and others get refurb's I will be interested to see what I get. The lady at the UPS store said, "Another xbox, huh?" I replied, "Yep," Then she told me that earlier this week a guy brought in his xbox and said that this was his 5th xbox. Man I really don't want to get into that cycle of getting a broken one back and going through the same motion over and over again. It does make me a little worried to think that I will be repeating this cycle every few months. I think it is really sad that Microsoft still hasn't figured out how to fix the 360's. It really shows what type of company they are, hopefully they will make me a happy customer and I will think higher of them.
At least I have 3 reliable machines to allow me to continue gaming, 2 thanks to sony (ps2 and ps3) and Nintendo Wii.

College Mistakes |
As some of you know I am in the process of looking for a job. I also want to find a job that requires my Bachelors degree, that I haven't really gotten a whole lot of use out of. Looking back I can say that for me I think I went into college a little too early. I feel like I am one of those guys that should have taken a year off and really tried to figure out what I wanted to do for a living.
I have my degree in Finance, which honestly doesn't interest me in the least. (At least from all the finance job descriptions that I read.) I think I was what I would call "educationally immature" when I was in school. While I was attending school I was one of those students that just went through the paces of school to get out. I switched majors at least 5 times, talking about being confused. I decided to get the degree in Finance because I knew I could use it in anything from personal to business life, but I had zero desire to seek out a position to use my finance degree.
Even though I did try to seek out directional advice my freshman year, I didn't put much effort in seeking out advice the rest of my college life. Which therefore lead to not getting very involved in the school or classes I took. I was basically looking to graduate and that was all the mattered.
Although I know it isn't for everyone, but there are certain types of people that should take a year of so off and really try to seek out the careers they would like and then go to college and figure out what it takes to get there. But I think one would need to use that year wisely and do an internship within a career field they are interested in. And not limit themselves to where they live either because there are so many different careers out there that may not be available in certain cities. Then one could walk into college with a definite goal in mind rather than wondering through college without a clue and graduating without a clue.
Currently I am looking at a Computer Lab Teacher position in an elementary school. Which really interest me at this point in my life due to my love of kids and computers. When I was in college I would have without a doubt enjoyed the kid aspect of teaching elementary school, but computers, no way. I hated computers when I started college, it was only towards the end of my college life that I even started messing with computers. Another strong desire that I have is to become a pilot, which I hope to do some day, but would only enjoy flying privately rather than commercially. (Right now it isn't feasible due to the fact that I would have to go to school obviously and we need to make money now.) The funny thing is I can view myself in more of those camp counselor type jobs, doing more outdoors recreation type jobs. I really am not a behind the desk type of person who wears a suit or dress pants, shirt and tie type.
As for what the future holds I honestly don't know. Right now I have high hopes for the computer teacher position. I really hope things work out there and I think it is a position that I would enjoy. Beyond that I don't know yet, but I guess we will just have to wait and see what God has in store for me.

Another 1 Bites the Dust! |
Well it finally happened to my xbox 360. I got the 3 flashing lights on the ROL. I was watching a show on my 360 just the other day and it froze. I shut it off then turned it back on and the 3 red lights came on. I unplugged the usb Rock Band hub and turned it on and it worked I was able to watch the rest of the show.
Last night we were gearing up for a little Rock Band get together and got to play a small part of 1 song and then it happened. It froze and the beautiful red lights appeared when we rebooted. Man was I unhappy because I know this means that I am going to be without my 360 for over a month. I have tried everything, but every time I boot it up the 3 red flashing lights appear. Now I fear that I am going to get a another console that is going to do the same thing. I guess we will have to wait and see.

Church Basketball |
I got a chance to play my first church league basketball game last night. (my teams second) I missed the first game due to that awful conjunctivitus I had. I couldn't get over how rough it was, I figured that it would be a little easier going. I played in high school and played in the Wichita City league one summer and never played in a game as rough as the one last night. One thing I do know is that the refs don't call a very tight game so there is a lot of slaps and get knocked around that wouldn't be allowed in high school. You were pretty much guaranteed to get knocked around if you drove to the basket and a high chance that there wouldn't be a foul called.
Besides that it was a lot of fun to get back on the court and play some competitive basketball. It is hard to believe how long it has been since I last played in the city league. (6 or 7 years ago.) My game is definitely a little rusty and I need to get back into the swing of things, but I look forward to playing again. Next time I will know that I can get away with a lot more on the defensive end of things. Honestly I wonder if I shouldn't be dressed in football attire!!!

Avatar: The Last Airbender |
Let me start off saying that I never really cared all that much about anime. But due to the writer's strike I have been looking for a couple of alternatives. I watch The Totally Rad Show and they recently did their top 5 picks of 2007 and in their TV section they pick Avatar for their top pick because it is the only show that they all had in their top 5. Anyways after seeing that and also knowing that it has gotten high ratings on the tv.com website, I decided to give it a shot plus it is a show that I can watch with the kids.
I must say that I am thoroughly impressed with the show. It has a great since of adventure, humor, good vs. evil and best of all an ongoing plot. Shows that get my attention the most are the ones that have a plot that continues over the entire season. (rather than the shows that come to a conclusion for each episode.) Gavin and I have been watching it the past 2 days and we are on episode 6 of season 1 and we both really enjoy watching it. I look forward to watching more episodes and seeing what happens to the characters.
After watching anime for the first time in my adult life it made me think about a series that I use to love to watch as a kid that I would classify as anime. I just found it today, it was called Belle and Sebastian, and I believe it aired on Nickelodeon in the mid 80's. It was about a boy and a huge fluffy white dog, and if I remember correctly they went around saving people. (not 100% on that) I found a clip of it on youtube.
It is pretty cool to go and watch Avatar, something I would consider a kid's show, personally I think I get more out of it than a kid would. Anyways, if you even have an inkling to see what it is about check it out, I really enjoy it!

Quick Exercise Post |
Just wanted to put up a quick post about my exercising. Unfortunately I have not exercised in the past few weeks, since moving. I was going to continue the following week, but after two days of moving I was extremely sore and worn out. Then Christmas and all the holidays came. I was going to get back on it with week 10 this week, but got sick on Saturday night and am just now getting back to feeling better. I hope to get started again in a few days.
